Humans face tremendous challenges in the form of deadly virus, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and environmental issues that poses a great threat to the existence of life. Biochemistry occupies a pivotal position in finding a solution to these problems. Advances in the biochemistry research have made it possible to develop vaccine against corona virus in the shortest possible time. Recent advances in Bio-technology and its industrial application is possible only through thorough understanding of biochemical principles underlying these innovations. 

Although establishes recently, Department of Biochemistry at HKM degree college has been actively engaged to develop next generation Researchers with a strong belief that talent which lies everywhere needs proper environment and opportunities to grow. The Principal of the college has been actively engaged to develop a separate and well-established laboratory for Biochemistry students in the newly constructed huts. 

Presently, the department offers an undergraduate 3-year   and 4yr B.Sc course along with other subjects as described in the curriculum provided by the University of Kashmir. A choice based credit system has been introduced in the college and there are total of 6 semesters  that students need to clear before being awarded with the degree. The students completing their B.Sc easily finds placement at postgraduate level in Indian Universities. Students also prepare for civil service exams after completing their course in the college.
