Environmental Science is a growing discipline and has emerged as an important field of study in the recent times. The Department of Environmental Science, HKM Degree College Bandipora was established in the year 2010. It was established with the aim of imparting to the students awareness and knowledge about the environment, skills to identify the problems associated with it and to foster attitudes and participation in various environmental issues. The departmentdeals with the teaching of undergraduate students under CBCS/Semester system, as per the syllabi prescribed by the University of Kashmir, Srinagar.

• Vision: “Developing Students as quality human resource to act as agents of change in promoting Environmental Protection and Conservation for present and future generations”.
• Objectives:

q  Provide knowledge, Awareness, Sensitivity and belonging among students towards environment.

q  Develop Skill,Attitude, andResponsibility insolving environmental problems.

q  Participation in activities that lead to improve environmental quality.

Provide high-quality environmental education and prepare students as human resource for betterment of environment.

The Department deals with the teaching of undergraduate students under CBCS/Semester system, as per the syllabi prescribed by the University of Kashmir, Srinagar.

• Departmental Activities

Apart from academics, the department undertakes a lot of extra and co-curricular activities to provide students real time knowledge about various natural surroundings and know-how to help solve local environmental problems.

• Plantation drives
• Cleanliness drives/ Anti-polythene drives
• Nature Camps/Nature Walks
• Seminars/Debates
• Painting/Drawing, Quiz and Essay Competitions
• One day field trip to natural habitats/ pollution sites etc

Celebrations of Important days/weeks like  Environmental/Wildlife Week, Earth day, Forest day, Water day, Biodiversity day etc.

 The department has a good number of books and magazines available in the college library on various topics related to Environmental Science to suffice the needs of the students and faculty.

The feedback from the studies is received at the end of the each semester to get acquainted with the shortcoming, difficulties and suggestions if any and redress them at an earliest.

v Strength

The Environmental Science Department is one of the important departments of the college. Its strength is its:

• Experienced and highly qualified faculty.
• Vibrant and active students
• Conducting various important environment oriented activities like Sanitation and Cleaning Drives, Plantation programs,Awareness Campaigns, Solid waste management, Anti-polythene drives,and World Environment Week etc. round the calendar.

v Weakness

• Environmental Studies is yet to be introduced as a Major Subject.
• Absence of Environmental Science as a core subject
• Absence of  Laboratory Work
• Lack of separate Departmental Block

v Opportunity

q  The department is introducing various skill enhancement courses to attract students from diverse fields of Science and Humanities such as:

• Solid Waste Management
• Ecology and Wildlife Conservation
•  Ecofriendly Technology etc.

q  Collaboration with different organizations/bodies for protection of the local environment

• Signing of MOU with the Wular Development Authority and District Municipal Committee Bandipora in future for Conservation of Wular Lake.

v Threat

• Not introduced as a major subject.
• Limited credits that discourage students to take the subject seriously.
