About

The Department of History started functioning as General subject for undergraduate course with the very foundation of college in 2005. Since then it has been one of the main departments in the college. At that time the system of education in place in this College, like other Colleges of the Valley affiliated to University of Kashmir, was annual. Later in 2015, the semester system of education was introduced replacing the annual system. To keep pace with time, the University of Kashmir adopted Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in its affiliating Colleges including HKM Degree College Bandipora as the new model of academic-curricula in 2017. From 2022, the College offers BA Honours in History as per New Education Policy 2020. Under the new scheme of things, the undergraduate course in History is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and in depth knowledge of Indian History so as to help them get admission in the prestigious universities of the country and abroad as well as perform well in the Civil Services and other competitive examinations. Field trips to Archaeological and heritage sites are being carried out to enable students to have first hand information of our Historical and cultural heritage. The syllabus of the course is also being regularly revised in order to keep it in consonance with the new research findings. Moreover the faculty members are always available to provide all possible assistance and guidance to students as and when required. Consequently students pass with flying colours and go for further higher studies.

Message

The Department of History is one of the premier departments of HKM Degree College Bandipora. The department through teaching of history strives to promote creative and critical thinking and to hone questioning and analytical faculty besides inculcating a sense of preserving a rich cultural heritage in students. It has been a paramount concern of the department to work for the creation of a tolerant and just society. The undergraduate course in  History is designed to provide students with a comprehensive and in depth knowledge of Indian History so as to help them get admission in the prestigious universities of the country and abroad as well as perform well in the Civil Services and other competitive examinations. Field trips to Archaeological and heritage sites are being carried out to enable students to have first hand information of our Historical and cultural heritage. The syllabus of the course is being regularly revised in order to keep it in consonance with the new research findings at the national and global level. Moreover the faculty members are always available to provide all possible assistance and guidance to students as and when required. Consequently students pass with flying colours and go for further higher studies. Facilities and Equipment

 The college is equipped with most modern facilities for facilitating the effective teaching for Students. Facilities like EDUSAT, access to web resources, Overhead projector and LCD projector, well furnished Seminar Hall and Class rooms, Photo copying facility, etc., are being made available to both students and teachers of the department.

 Library: The department does not have its own library but has a collection of some good books which are often provided to the students. Besides there is a central library with a vast and diverse collection of books always open for the students of history.

 Methods of Teaching: Lecture method, Group discussion and Demonstration methods are adopted to improve student learning. Students are also encouraged to ask questions, make assignments and give presentations. Also special and remedial classes are arranged for slow learners.

 Nara Nag: Students of the department were taken on a study tour to Nara Nag, Kangan in 2017.  Detailed report is attached herewith.

 Pari Mahal: Students were taken on a study tour to Pari Mahal, Srinagar in 2018. Detailed report is attached herewith. 

SWOC Analysis

Strength: Ever since its inception the department is running smoothly.  We are trying our best to enrich students in such a way so that they can keep pace with the advanced learning at an optimum level. Syllabus is constantly being revised and updated. Teacher-student ratio is satisfactory. Teachers are always and easily accessible to students. Group discussions, Debates, Presentations by students are conducted to inculcate the spirit of creative and critical thinking in the students.

Weakness: The department is faced with few limitations. First we do not have a departmental library. Second the department does not have the autonomy to conduct exams. Third, there is not a separate room for the faculty members of the department.

Opportunities: The department uses every possible means to provide quality education to students and thereby enable them to secure admission in various prestigious of higher learning.

Challenges: The department is committed to achieve its objective of making it an excellent centre of academic learning as envisioned in its mission and vision.

Future Plans

The department aspires to set up its own library and enrich it with all the books focusing on the latest trends in the subject. Tours to historical places shall be conducted more frequently.
